In addition to Torrevieja, there are at least 6 “must
see” places to go all within about 60-90 minutes drive. You may not have
time to go to all of them but in order of "must see" they are:
a) Mar Menor
About 10 miles South. Turn right at the bottom of the hill (Campsite roundabout) and stay on the N332 towards Cartagena.
You will come to a roundabout eventually with a small fishing boat on it. Turn left and this takes you into Mar Menor. You
will see a ruined windmill. Park where you can.
The walkway which goes out to sea has, on the left, a lagoon. People put the mud from this on their skin to cure
arthritis etc. The beach is good too. You will see La Manga across the water.
b) La Manga
About 30 miles South. A strip of land that has the sea on either side and some nice beaches
and cafés. The England football squad
come here to train.
Turn right at the bottom of the hill (Campsite roundabout) and stay on the N332 towards Cartagena. The Motorway becomes toll-free after a while, so get on it heading towards Cartagena, and follow the signs for La Manga.
c) Elche (Elx)
About 15 miles NorthWest. A very old town with lots of history. Very nice public gardens.
d) Cartagena
Very old town. Nice harbour.
Turn right at the bottom of the hill (Campsite roundabout) and stay on the N332 towards Cartagena. The Motorway becomes toll-free after a while, so get on it heading towards Cartagena.
e) Alicante
About 30 miles North . Great shops, lovely beaches, superb restaurants and easy parking.
Just turn left at the bottom of the hill (Campsite roundabout) and stay on the N332 all the way into Alicante. Ignore all Motorway signs. The road will take you past the Marina, and this is the best area to park. There is plenty of parking in the area, mostly
underground, and clearly signposted. Just past the Marina
is a Tram system you can take to connect with a train to Benidorm. This is about an hour but is very cheap. (About 6 Euros
return for adults).
f) Benidorm
About 50 miles North. You can drive to Benidorm in about 90 minutes. Just turn left at the bottom of the
hill (Campsite roundabout) and stay on the N332 towards Alicante.
You will see signs for the airport just after you go through a tunnel and you should head towards the airport. Go past it
and after about ¾ mile you will connect with the A-7 motorway. Get on it towards Valencia
(not Murcia!) and stay on it till you
get to Benidorm. There is a small toll when coming off at Benidorm.
In addition, try and see Guadalest
In the mountains north of Benidorm, and breath-taking! Visit the animal sanctuary. You may get a free
trip via a blanket trip if you can put up with an hour's sales chat! You can book a free blanket trip at most markets.
